She graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Art in 1953, after which she engaged in theatrical activity for a short time. In those years, it was fashionable for artists to adopt different names, so she changed her name to Monika (after she had read a book with the same title and liked it as a name, adding her mother's surname her Vitti). In 1955 she made her debut as Mariana in Moliere's L'avaro directed by Alessandro Fersen at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and the following year, again on the Palladian stage, she played the role of Ophelia in Riccardo Bocelli's Hamlet. In 1956, she was also the protagonist in "Bella e Cesare Meano" at the Teatro e Convenjo in Milan under the direction of Enzo Ferrieri. In Rome Monika Vitti performed in a one-act comedy series at the Arlecchino Theater (now the Flaiano Theater). After some supporting roles in some comic films, she caught the eye of the director Michelangelo Antonioni, with whom she combined an artistic and sentimental relationship. The director made her his muse, and Vitti thus became the protagonist of the so-called "tetralogy of incommunicability". She played the tortured Claudia in L'avventura (1960), the seductive Valentina in La notte (1961), the mysterious and unhappy Vittoria in L'eclisse (1962) and the neurotic Giuliana in Red Desert ” (1964). In the eighties he returned to work with Michelangelo Antonioni in "The Mystery of Oberwald" (1980) and together with Alberto Sordi in "I know that you know that I know" (1982). In 1981, he joined Vittorio Gassman in Mario Monicelli's "In the Hotel Room". In 1983, with the film "Flirt by" and newcomer Roberto Russo, she received the actress award at the 1984 Berlin Film Festival; the collaboration with Russo, her future husband, continued with "Francesca è mia" (1986); both films were also written by Vitti himself. In June 1984 he participated in the honor guard at the funeral of the secretary of the Italian Communist Party Enrico Berlinguer, together with other exponents of Italian cinema such as Federico Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni. In 1988, the prestigious French newspaper "Le Monde" made a sensational blunder against her, publishing on the front page the news of her death, "which happened by suicide with barbiturates". The actress, with a lot of elegance and sense of humor, limited herself to denying the news, thanking those responsible for the blunder that extended her life. In the same year, he starred with Orazio Orlando in the music video "Yes who is he there", a song performed by Mina, taken from the album Rane supreme and composed by Pino D'Angiò. In some of her films in the sixties and seventies, she also starred with Fiorella Mannoia, still unknown as a singer. Monica Vitti at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival presented the film Secret Scandal, which she wrote, directed and starred in. After making her directorial debut with the film "Scandal Secret" (1990), which she starred alongside Catherine Spaak, it remains her last appearance on the big screen. In 1992, he performed in the television mini-series "Ma tu love me"? alongside Johnny Dorelli, in which she plays the role of a social worker, and in the 1993-1994 season she was part of the cast of the Rai 1 show "Domenica in".
