Pellumb Kulla
Director / playwright / publicist and translator
Born on January 10, 1940 in Zemblak, Korce district.
Attended high school in Tirana and graduated from the “Aleksander Moisiu” high school for actor in 1964.
After that, Kulla was appointed to the “Petro Marko” Theater in Vlora, where he worked there for more than two years. For political reasons, he left his job and was forced to work in the Kanina quarry and in the Construction Company for a period of about 5 years.
Later, Kulla will be appointed to the Theater of Fier, the place where he works and create for about 18 years. With this Institution, he has staged many dramas and variety shows, quite successful, in most of which he is also the author of the script.
From 1990 to 1992, he was a teacher of acting at the Faculty of Performing Arts, also holding the position of dean in this faculty.
In the 90s, he was involved in the movement to overthrow the dictatorship in support of the democratic forces. After 1992, he was engaged in the country’s diplomatic representation, for a short time in Bonn, Germany, and then he was appointed as Albania’s representative to the United Nations, a position he held until 1997.
From 1997 to 1998, Kulla worked as editor-in-chief of the newspaper of the Albanian emigrants in New York “Iliria”. However, his most successful artistic activity remains the one at the “Bylis” Theater in Fieri, where a series of his dramas and comedies, such as “Shoku Niqifor”, “Dy krisma ne Paris” were performed in the repertoire of this theater and on the TVSH Albanian Public Television: “Beautiful old house”, “This is how I love you”, “Cobo Rrapushi with friends”, “Kercuri” and especially short comedies, where the most numerous are with Estrada e Fieri.
Pellumb Kulla has also published 5 volumes of sketches, one-act comedies, and lyrical-humorous stories, a monograph dedicated to the actor Skender Sallaku, a compilation of his dramaturgical creativity in three volumes “Theatre, this fascinating game” in 2007.
His work also includes the film comedies “Tela per violin” (1987), “Stola ne park” (1988), “Rrufe nga Mali”.
As a well-known creator of humor and as a director, he stands out for his fine taste, culture and wit. His direction, in addition to the drama (Gjemimi i atij dimri), epic-heroic spirit (Dy krisma ne Paris), stands out for its subtle and elegant humor, full of pleasant surprises.
In dramaturgy, the play “Dy krisma ne Paris” is considered his best work, even though it was a heroic play with strong political pathos, it stands out for its drama and strong conflict.
Pellumb Kulla is the husband of actress Xhuljeta Kulla.
They currently live in New York for a long time.
