Time has passed since his last role, however, anyone who has seen theater before the 90s, or still loves old Albanian films, cannot help but remember the actor Luan Qerimi. There was a time when the great actor of the Theater received endless applause from the audience. He has not lacked offers for different roles, even after retirement, but the actor wanted the public to preserve for him the former image, when he was at the peak of his career.

Luan Qerimi belongs to that constellation of actors who raised the Albanian theater. It was mostly cut for character roles and it is precisely these characters that stick out the most in the viewer’s mind. He played the roles of heroes, like that of Sulejman Vokshi, fathers, officers, quaestors, nobles,… sometimes dressed in a military uniform, sometimes as a mountaineer, sometimes as a gangster with a plaid jacket, sometimes with a long mustache… and always has attracted attention with his natural play, far from pathos, from which the Albanian theater has suffered.

Although it is a living school, he did not want to give meaning, to make comparisons between “his time” and todays, although the attraction shows that the new ways of organizing work in the theater and cinematography did not suit him very well. He belongs to a generation, which entered the role by foundation, and it is impossible to follow other “rules of the game”.

Born on October 15, 1929, in the city of Lushnje. Like many of his colleagues, he started to become active at a young age with amateur troops. It would be the time of his military service, when he would be noticed for his talent, during the performances that were organized with the Army Theater. “Teatri Popullor”, which at that time was in its first steps, was eager for new talents, for powerful voices, such as that of Qerimi, so without hesitation the managers at that time called him to become part of the Professional Troupe, in 1954. On the stage of this theater, he will perform about 70 premieres, performing protagonist and secondary roles until 1990.

His career as an actor started with a role in the drama “Haxhi Qamili” in 1954, to continue with another episodic role, that of Skender in the comedy “Prefect” by Besim Lëvonja. But this would only be the beginning, because the directors would entrust him with roles one after the other, and today that he is no more, he has a total of 80 eyes on the stage of the theater.

His roles in the drama “Dead River” are imprinted in the viewer’s mind; “Name me too”; “Era before the court” by Ekrem Kryeziu, in the drama “General of the dead army” directed by Piro Mani, in the comedy “Carnivals of Korça” by Spiro Çomorra, etc.

But he has also performed in pearls of world dramaturgy such as the play “Arturo Ui” by Bertold Brecht, where he plays the role of Ernesto Roma, his performances in the Shakespearean tragedies “Hamlet” and “Othello”, the performance in the play “Kremlin Hours” by N .Pogodin, etc.

In cinematography, his first role would be in 1964, in the film “Our Land”, to continue with other prominent roles, such as that of Kalosh Cami in the film “The Fall of Idols” in 1977, that of the old man of Përkolaj in the movie “Red Covenant”, that of Francesk Luku in the TV movie “Time does not Waits” in 1984, the role of Meri’s father in the movie “Death of a Horse” in 1992.

His most recent role is in the television film “Qëndresa 2” produced by “Kosova Film” in 1998. For his artistic merits, Luan Qerimi was awarded the high title “Merited Artist” in the same year. He was one of the actors more engaged in the television shows “Theatre on the Screen”, or even in the radio dramatizations “Heroism of our People in the Centuries”, “Artistic Speech in the Microphone” with about 200 roles. He would continue to be active for a while, to retire finally from stage and screen in 1990.

Qerimi passed away at the age of 89 on December 2, 2018.
