Violeta Sekuj
Actress / director

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

She is undoubtedly a glorious part of the Theater “Migjeni” with her contribution to the stage art, best known by the Shkodran public through the dramas where she has skillfully performed. The actress belongs to that “silent” generation, which is no longer talked about, and there is no information.

She has “survived” until today when she appears in two or three dramas (episodic roles) and where the younger audience remembers best in “Gjaku i Arberit” / “Ceshtja e Blertes” / “Zekthi”, in the movie “The end of a blood feud” / “The Militant” / “Harsh shore” or any other.

But of course, her roles and her artistic portrait are not so limited. She has countless roles and interpretations in the “Migjeni” Theater, for which information is unfortunately missing.

Violeta Sekuj and many actresses of this profile should not be forgotten but remembered with respect for their contribution and work in Albanian stage art.

She was born in Korce on October 17, 1933. She graduated from the Artistic High School “Jordan Misja” in 1952 as an actress. She is one of the first educated actresses of the theater “Migjeni” in Shkodra. For all those who have a knowledge of our artists, this name is not unknown, on the contrary, she is actually one of the protagonists not only of the “Migjeni” Theater but also of the Albanian cinema. In Shkoder, it is rare for art lovers not to know this name, but for the general Albanian public art lovers, the relevant information is missing intentionally or unintentionally, this is not known. Anyway, it’s a shame for the art institutions and their managers who don’t find time to talk about these great artists of the Shkodra scene like Violeta Sekuj, Antoneta Fishta, Vitore Nino, Paulin Lacaj, Pistol Soja, Adem Kastrati, Ana Gjini.. .. a long list of such names, incomparable artists. Even today, it is not clear why the same censorship continues!! Anyway, regardless of censorship, erasure, or any other malicious attempt to remove them, Violeta Sekuj and artists like that have left their “mark” on the stage of the “Migjeni” Theater.

Thus, as an actress and director, she has left her valuable contribution, her roles in dramas from this troupe are countless, it is enough to mention some of them, such as the Bulgarian drama entitled “Tractorists”, “The Upheaval” (Ksenja’s slave , dubbing), “Agimi” (Hana’s slave), “Our land” (the role of Fila, dubbing), “Tartuffe” (the role of Marjana), “Engagement with confusion” (the roles of Lucy and Gina, dubbing), “Mother” (the role of Marija), “Shtate Shaljanët” (the role of Lufa), “Kunora e Nurijes” (the role of Zyhra), “Këneta” (the role of Rina, dubbing), “Doll’s House” (the role of Kristina ), “The Lottery Ticket” (the slave of the Swallow), “The Chick of the Mountains” (the role of Mara), “Cartridge in the dowry” (the role of Mary (Gjelina)), “People of our days” (the role of the Flutura). ….

She stood out in the role of Jema the heroine in the drama “Zekthi” (1964) where she plays alongside a giant name, the actor and director Serafin Fanko. With this role, she presents a fragile feminine world, generally kept in a psychological tone with dramatic conception. Four years later (1968) inspires the role of Gjelina in the well-known drama “Fisheku ne paje”, a role in which she manages to express a contradictory spirit and behavior, stuck and afraid of the exercise of patriarchal power in the family, with enthusiasm which comes after the encouragement that he gains from the chance of an expected equality and emancipation. We find Violeta years later in “Ceshtja e Blertes” in the role of a fanatical mother bound by old habits and also in the drama of professor Fadil Kraje “Gjaku i Arberit” (1981) in a role which she, although episodic, manages to “rule” the stage as a harsh queen would, conceiving the trusted role in two interpretive holes, in the sensory planes of an openly expressed cynicism and arrogance that was fueled by destructive consciousness.

Violeta Sekuj finished the one-year course for directing and then devoted herself to directing, putting on the stage of the “Migjeni” Theater several successful plays such as “Djem te mbare” always directed by prof. Fadil Krajes, “Hekurat” by Skender Drini, etc.

She also staged several concerts with the House of Culture, several children’s festivals… She had the good fortune to work with knowledgeable intellectuals, such as: Prenkë Jakova, Tonin Harapi, Albert Paparisto, etc.

Again, no one remembers the skill and ability of this lady to make you her own, it’s enough just to listen to her ringing voice during the performance.

In the films “Militant”, “End of a blood feud”, “Butterfly in my cabin”, “Bregu i ashper” the director of the theater “Migjeni” was given only episodic roles. But her acting and directing skills are unlimited. Violeta Sekuj, even though she has been left in silence, is and will remain a great artist, as well as many other names (ironically, mostly from Shkodra), from where all Albanian stage art would not have the full meaning, and to remain truncated without mentioning them.
