Born on October 1, 1945 in Tirana, (his father is from Tirana, as he likes to quote this detail about his origin). During the year 1964, he studied for only 5 months at the “Aleksander Moisiu” High School in the acting department. Then he went to do his mandatory military service and in 1965 he was a part of the Soldier’s “Estrada” and at the same time he studied at the High Institute of Arts as an actor.

In 1967, he completed a directing course under the direction of Pandi Stillu and Pirro Mani. In 1967, he completed the High School “Aleksandër Moisiu”, near the People’s Theatre. A year later, after graduating, he officially started working at the Theater, that is exactly on January 1, 1968.

Basha debuted as a dramatic actor in 1968, performing the main role in “Everyone’s shelter” directed by Pirro Mani. Over the years, he has successfully played dozens of roles in dramas and comedies on the stage of our National Theatre. For the general Albanian public, his magical interpretation of the vagabond Arturo in Bertold Brecht’s “Arturo Ui” has remained unforgettable.

Shkelqim has brilliantly and successfully interpreted a number of roles from our national and foreign dramaturgy. His career starts with episodic roles but later when he is entrusted with the role of Arturo Ui in the drama with the same title, he shines and reaches the top. Regardless of the fact that he in this role was a double with the famous actor Kadri Roshi, he was able to give it a clear social dimension with his superb skills, characteristics of the criminal and the political gangster that were beautifully identified in Arturo Ui’s story plans with the screams and his delirium in front of Cicero’s peacemakers (based on Brecht’s scenario), using the stigmatizing elements of satire and sarcasm.

Shkelqim Basha is more of a prototypical Theater actor, as if he was born for it. Performed 70 roles in the National Theater and several roles in cinematography. In the Theater stand out: Vashik “Uninvited Friends”, Arturo “Arturo Ui”, The worker “The Irreplaceable”, Lexi “The Dead River”, Jep “Everyone`s Shelter”, Duke of Milan “Two Gentlemen from Verona”, Rama “Those who are needed”, Charli “The death of a commissioner”, Archbishop “Who brought Doruntina”, Batista “The taming of rebellion”, Iskierdo “Monserati”, Dede Lleshi, the bandit from “Cuca e male”; “Twelfth Night” etc.

In 1969, he will represent cinematography with two films, “Guerrilla unity” and “Why these drumbeats” as “chaotic soda”. In “Guerrilla Unit” he is entrusted with the opening of this film in the role of Gramoz, dedicated to the “People’s Hero” Vojo Kushi, whom Shkelqimi interprets with the mastery of a professional actor.

A year later, in 1970, he played the role of Petrit in “The Trace”. It will take a full 14 years for him to return to film, when in 1984 he performs in “The Unforgotten” in the role of Kico; To mention other roles such as: “Hard start” (1986) in the role of Bled’s uncle “Stone of Faith” (1986) as Mirketi’s brother; (1987); ” Invisible world”(1987);”Waxed shirts” (1989); “Who is the murderer” in the role of Llazi, the chief of the investigation.

After 1990, the actor Shkelqim Basha ends his long career of about 30 years by retiring. His acting was characterized by the liveliness of acting, with an active presence on stage, with a ringing voice and pure pronunciation of words, a graceful actor both on stage and on screen.

He currently lives in Milan, Italy!
