Agim Zajmi (1936-2013)
Scenographer, painter, teacher! Holds the tittle “Pepople`s Painter and “Professor”
Zajmi was born in Tirana on November 28. His family was exiled from Peja of Kosova, Albania as early as 1920. In 1957, he graduated from the “Jordan Misja” Artistic Lyceum in Tirana and then began his higher studies in scenography at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad (today Shen-Peterburg), in the former Soviet Union, which ends in 1961. Agim first worked as a scenographer at the Opera and Ballet Theater, continued at the “Teatri Popullor”, then (1978) as a lecturer at the High Institute of Arts until he retired in 2003. In over 40 years of continuous work, with wide creativity, he has realized more than 250 projects in scenography, from national and world dramaturgy, collaborating with many theaters in the Albanian space (Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia).
He had the most fruitful collaboration with the director Pirro Mani with over 40 projects. Agim Zajmi is also noted as one of the most famous costume designers of the Albanian theater with over 300 productions, where the sketching of the costume regarding the character of the character, the time, the environment and the free symbolic and allegorical treatments stand out. His scenography stands out for the new language that he brought in the 60s and beyond, with the power of ideas, such as the clear message, the epic spirit through a harsh realization (Qielli i kuq, Perkolgjinajt, Besa e Madhe, Permbytja e madhe).
He has used elements of expressive, allegorical forms, rich in a rich semantics which has included scenography finding, the treatment of decorations, costumography, the architectural concept of the theater space, light and colors in lighting (Cuca e maléve, Fytyra e dyte , Arturo Ui).
Agim Zjami freed the stage from the overload of descriptive objects from naturalistic shows, as he did with the dramas “Keneta”, “Hije te nates”, “Toka e jone”, “Familia e peshkatarit” where he gave more dynamics to the decorations, used contemporary techniques such as for example “Gjenerali i ushtrise se vdekur”, “nata e 12-te”, “Romeo dhe Xhuljeta”, “Auditori”; correctly evaluated the actor in the stage space as the central figure of the show, placing the scenographic solution as much as possible in the function of the game, as was seen in “Luiza Miller”, “Fytyra e dyte”, “Vdekja e nje komisioneri” etc.
In addition to scenography and costume design, A. Zajmi also stands out as an easel painter with many landscapes, compositional paintings, portraits, etc. Among his paintings we can mention: “Dede Gjoluli”, “Ganimet Terbeshi”, “Fusha e Kosoves”, “Vasil Laci”, etc.
He also has an assistant who came as a scenography professor at the Academy of Arts, teaching and training hundreds of young artists. Zajmi was the president of the National Association of Figurative Artists based in Tirana.
He holds the hight title of “People’s Painter” and the university title of “Professor”.
Agim Zajmi passed away on November 3, 2013.
