Nazmi Bunjaku (1931-2007)
Director of the “Petro Marko” Theater, Vlore!

Everything has to do with the beautiful coastal town of Vlora and Nazmi had created a close partnership for more than three decades. The professional Artistic Club of the City of Vlora is associated with the name of Nazmi Bunjaku, as one of its founders, who for more than 35 years in the artistic scene of this city created indisputable values in our performing arts, even at the national level.

Nazmi is the founder of Estrada, but also of the Dramatic Theatre. He’s like the Lymiers for the movie. That’s where history starts, that’s where success starts. After the Lymier brothers came masters of the film, but no one took their place. Even Nazmi Bunjaku occupies a place of honor not only in this city, but also in the national professional theater movement.

He was born on October 28, 1931 in Kukës, in a family originating from Gjakova. Bunjaku takes his first lessons in his hometown and then completes High School art in the drama department. Nazmi is among the first students of this Lyceum. After finishing high school, he works temporarily at the House of Culture in Tirana and then in Kukës, where he stages several plays, including “Happiness must be protected”, “The White Angel”.

After completing his military service in 1954, by special decision of the Ministry of Culture, he was appointed director at the House of Culture in the city of Vlora. In 1955, on the basis of the amateur movement, “Estrada Profesioniste” was formed, and he is also the first artistic director of this variety show.

He worked with Estrada’s troupe for about 10 years creating her artistic physiognomy with about 50 premieres, where as the most successful we mention “Kalon turjela te bucela”, “Rare recipe”, Jewel box”, “Kakaris kur te vjen veza” , “Woman’s voice”, “Greetings from the village”, etc.

These performances were welcomed and applauded not only in Vlora, but everywhere this troupe performed throughout the country.

In general, he created variety shows, but he also created pivot shows, which revolved around an idea or a character. In 1955, Nazmi Bunjaku was awarded the “Work Order” for the operetta “Wind of freedom”. Being a director at the Estrada of Vlora, in 1959 he got the right to study in Soviet Union, where for two consecutive years he studied at the Dramatic Institute “GITIS” in Moscow.

In 1961, he stopped his studies due to the political situation and the termination of relations with BS. He continued his higher studies at ILA later in the field of directing by correspondence. In 1962, the Professional Dramatic Theater of Vlora was created. The new troupe composed of distinguished and talented actors of the amateur movement such as Astrit Hasho, Vangjel Panozaqi, Piro Seva, Liza Laska, Myqerem Ferra, Ali Roshi, Vasillaq Godo, etc., was the core of this theater under the artistic direction of director Nazmi Bunjaku.

Nazmi was at the same time the artistic leader for both troupes, both for stage and theater. On the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, two premieres were given: “O flamur gjaku, o flamur shkabe”, a musical tableau, dedicated to Independence directed by Nazmi Bunjaku, as well as the first absolute premiere of the professional theater of Vlora, the drama “Fundosja e nje skuadre” with the director invited by the National Theater “People’s Artist” Kujtim Spahivogli.

He started his career in the theater with several successful plays such as “An Such Love”, “A Holiday”, “The Fisherman’s Family”, (honored with a prize at the First Theater Festival), “Brothers”, “For those who are at sea”, “In the name of happiness”, “The street Budi 723”, “Infidelity”, etc. some of his parts of recent years have been filmed by TVSH and have become known to a wider audience throughout Albania.

Nazmi is a master of several stage genres such as comedy, drama, operetta, musical tableau, musical-literary performances, etc. For more than 35 years in a row, the director was distinguished for a creative passion and continuous efforts to increase the professional level, in deepening the values of realistic features with a high artistic level. These premieres speak not only about his diverse interests as a director, but also about the high level of artistic execution, being awarded at the national level.

But his main interests were directed mainly in the field of stage and theater directing. He also acted in a film, in the first Albanian triptych “When a day it dawned” in the first episode “Arms”, in the role of the front “ballists” commander.

The entire 40-year activity of the artist Nazmi Bunjaku is summed up in over 100 premieres both on stage and in the theater.

He passed away on May 10, 2007 in Tirana.
