Marianthi Xhako (1936-2017)
Director of chronicle and documentary films. “Merited Artist”.
Xhako was born in Berat on November 2, 1936. She completed her higher studies at the Cinematographic Institute “VGIK” in Moscow for directing documentary films. She is the first documentary director with a higher professional education in Albanian cinematography. The first documentary film for her was “The City of 1000 Windows” – 1959, which she presented as a thesis. 
In 1960, she started working in cinematography, dealing first with the shooting of newsreels and later exclusively with documentary films.
From 1965 and until she left due to age, she made about 60 documentary films, the most prominent of which are: “In the flow of life” – 1965 / “Cajupi” – 1966 / “Report from Kurbneshi” – 1967 / “Even we are soldiers” – 1969 / “Tefta Tashko Koco Sings” – 1973 / “Girl from Puka” – 1973 / “Year 1924” – 1976 / “Odhise Paskali” – 1977″ / “Riza Cerova” – 1979 / “Vasil Shanto” – 1981 / “Painter Abdurrahim Buza” – 1982 / “Margarita and Kristaq Tutulani” – 1984 etc.

She has also been honored with many special awards. She was considered one of the veteran creators of the former Kinostudio “Shqiperia e Re”.
Xhako passed away on June 18, 2017.
