LONI PAPA March 28, 1932 – June 23, 2018 Playwright, writer Loni Papa was born in Bubullimë, Lushnja district, on March 28 in an intellectual family. His father, Thoma Papa, graduated from the Normal School of Elbasan, was a teacher and school director in the city of Lushnje. He received his first lessons in his hometown and attended the seven-year school in the city of Elbasan. He completed his secondary education at the "17 November" Pedagogical School in Tirana. He completed his higher studies in the branch of Albanian Language and Literature, at the Faculty of History – Philology at the University of Tirana. His literary activity started in the high school period. His first creations in prose and poetry were published in the newspaper "Zëri i Rinėja", "Letrari i Ri", "Drita" and in the magazines "Hosteni" and "Pionieri". After finishing high school, at a young age, he was appointed editor in the newspaper "Zëri Rinîë" where he worked for three years. During this period, he published his first volume of poetry, "Fillo kënken çifteli" (1956). Then he worked as a teacher of Albanian language and literature in the city of Lushnja. After completing his higher studies, he resumed his work as an editor and journalist in the newspaper "Zëri i Rinija". He was the author of children's literature, prose, poetry, journalistic writings, stories, fables, etc. but mainly he devoted himself to drama, with which he also created an artistic individuality expressed for the time. His most popular dramas are "Cuca e maleve" (1967); "Margo" (1969); "Crossing the Street" (1976); "The Stones of Kreshane" (1976); "Zbatharaket" (1976). In 2003, he published the book with 5 plays: "Cafka e detit"; "Arda"; "Lidra's Marriage"; "Vozaberesi Dako"; "Genius of stupidity", which in terms of level and structure do not show growth, have narrative elements, lack of tension and concentration of action without managing to overcome his previous dramas. "Cuca e maleve" was a resounding success at the National Theatre, directed by Pirro Mani, which was performed over 250 times. In 1966, the drama "Cuca e Maleve" was staged at the "Migjeni" Theater in Shkodra by director Mihal Luarasi, and after its success, in 1967, it was staged at the People's Theater by director Pirro Mani. The drama "Cuca e Maleve" won the Republic Award of the Second Degree, in 1972. Based on the drama "Cuca e Maleve", in 1970 the libretto of the ballet "Cuca e Maleve" was created by co-authors Loni Papa and Agron Aliaj. This ballet with music by the composer Nikolla Zoraqi, was put on the stage of the Albanian Opera and Ballet Theater by the choreographer Agron Aliaj. The drama and ballet "Cuca e Maleve" have been performed inside and outside Albania. The dramas "Cuca e Maleve" and "Marga" have been awarded national prizes. Loni Papa is the author of 13 plays. From 1970, he continued his activity as a freelance writer. In the years 1994-2001 he created and directed the publishing house "Ardita" where his works, those of other Albanian authors and translations by foreign authors were published. Passed away on June 22, 2018, in Montreal, Canada. His body rests in his homeland, Tirana.
