In memory of director Gjergj Xhuvani (1963-2019)

Gjergj Xhuvani (1963 – 2019) Director, screenwriter, producer. He was born in Tirana on December 20, 1963. He has been in contact with Albanian cinema since 1981, when he started as an actor (albeit episodic) in the TV movie "Edhe ne luftuam"; Four years later, he will perform another episodic role in "Shadows that remain behind". He has another episodic role in the movie "Apassionata" – 1983.

The son of the well-known writer Dhimiter Xhuvan. In 1986, he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Tirana, Department of Dramatic Arts. From 1986 to 1990, he worked as an assistant director at the "Shqiperia e Re" Film Studio. His first film as a director comes in 1991, "Black and White" short film. In the 90s, you worked as a director in the films "The Last Sunday" (1993); "A day from a life" (1994) and "Last Love" (1995) With the film "Funeral Business" which was also awarded a special prize at the 11th Albanian Film festival, he takes a qualitative step by addressing the rudeness of life, crime and social imbalance in 1997. Then he is the director of the film "Parrullat" (Slogans) – 2001, the film criticizes the dictatorship and extreme ideology of the Albanian society. In particular, this film managed to enter and win a prize in the first works section of the Cannes Film Festival, as well as win the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It continues with the films "Dear enemy" (2004) and "Lindje perendim, lindje" (2008). In 2011, he produced the telefilm series "in search of whom" Xhuvani with the film "Last Sunday" (1993) received the Special Jury Prize for short films at the Mediterranean Film Festival in "Bastillie 93". While the film "Last Love" won the best director award at the 10th Albanian Film Festival. His wife, the actress Luiza Xhuvani, has been the protagonist in almost all the films directed by him. He passed away on August 14, 2019, after a serious illness.
