Fatbardh Smaja (1956-2015)
Actor, director of the “Migjeni” Theater as well as well-known actor of Albanian cinematography.
Smaja was born on September 2, 1956 in the city of Shkodra. He has been in contact with art since he was a child when he studied cello, and then clarinet at the “Preng Jakova” Music School. Then he will attend the High Institute of Arts for acting in Tirana. After completing his studies, he would dedicate a good part of his life to the theatrical genre.
In 1980, he started working at the “Migjeni” theater as an actor, and over the years he would count about 30 roles in comedy, drama, and tragedy. In the “Migjeni” Theater he will also engage in directing, starting as an assistant to a big name such as Serafin Fanko “People’s Artist”;
Later, Mr. Smaja completely takes on the role of the director, putting his own part in the performance on stage. Some of the works he has staged are “The Importance of Being Honest”, “The Man Who Saw Death With His Eyes”, “The Imaginary Invalid”, “Zeneli”, “Dreams of Eldorado” (2014); etc.
He has also brought to the stages of Albanian theaters every year, works of great national and international importance, where the theme and message conveyed in these creations distinguish his performance and work.
Fatbardh Smaja has been one of the directors most appreciated by the public. His last drama that holds the company as a director was “The Silver Candlestick” which was staged on October 31, 2015 on the occasion of the 90th birthday of the poet Martin Camaj, the premiere of which the author himself could not attend as he was hospitalized.
In October of this year (2015), he was appointed as the director of the “Migjeni” Theatre.
Fatbardhi has also played in several Albanian films, it is enough to mention some of them as protagonists in “The End of a Feud” (1983), “Blerta`s Engagement” (1984), “Colors of Age” (1990).
Samaja passed away prematurely at the age of 59 due to a serious illness. The loss of Smaja is heavy not only for his family, his wife and daughter who was his partner on stage, but also for his son who inherited his love for the director.
