ODYSSEY
Serial television drama co-produced and broadcast by RAI in 1968, based on the poem of the same name by Homer.
Main actors: Bekim Fehmiu in the role of Ulysses and Irini Papa (Irene Papas) in the role of Penelope.
Director: Franco Rossi, together with Piero Schivazappa and Mario Bava.
The Polyphemus episode was directed entirely by Mario Bava;
as assistant director, it was his own son Lamberto Bava (uncredited).
Homer’s Odyssey was translated from the Greek by Rosa Calzecchi Onesti.
Scenes were shot primarily at Dino De Laurentiis’ film studios in Rome, while outdoor shooting took place primarily in Yugoslavia.
Each episode was preceded by an introduction in which the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti read a few lines of poetry.
The drama is the first RAI production ever made in color, as it was produced with the aim of international distribution and was therefore also intended for countries where televisions already broadcast in color (RAI officially adopted color only nine years later, in 1977).
Odysseus was one of the most successful scripts at RAI, due to the level of spectacularity higher than that of previous television productions.
