Born in Pogradec, on May 23, and from a young age he was involved in literature. “The Last Bells” was his first volume of stories. Continued his higher studies in Language-Literature at the University of Tirana and then at the Institute of literature “Gorki” in the Soviet Union.
At the beginning of the 90s, he was the director of the National Theater*. He has written many novels, such as: “The Tunnel” (1966, severely criticized by the party bodies for its deep realist spirit), “On foot again, “The Awakening of Nebi Surrel”, “The White Path”, “I will live differently”, “The death of Mr. Kaloti”, “I do not sell my soul”, “My world”, “The pain of light”, “The tomorrow of a woman”, “Sunday after death”, “The second crucifixion of Christ” etc.
Dh. Xhuvani is also known as a dramatist in the plays “Dama e Dritave” (I969), “Né prag té jetés” (I982). “(1986), “For a little land and one woman” (1989) etc. In his works, the drama of the events, the rich fables and the original subjects stand out. In the focus of his views, there is a place for man’s will for recovery, love for work, youthful whims and the need to overcome difficulties, spiritual injuries that come from the past, hypocrisy and alienation caused by the attitude towards property, the tragedy of life under oppression, of powerful people, injustice and power speculation.
Beside as an outstanding novelist and prose writer, Dh. Xhuvani made a name for himself with several feature film scripts, especially those he made with his son, the director Gjergj Xhuvani.
He started his journey as a screenwriter with the film “The Fitter Girl / Montatorja” (1970), in the form of a movie poem. The scenario that created the premises of a good movie was “War Mornings” (1971), where a dramatic reality is brought to life, processed specifically in filmic language.
Then comes the film “Alley`s that sought the sun” (1975), based on his novel “The Awakening of Nebi Surreli”, in which attention is drawn to the social wealth of the urban environments of Albania during the years of the guerilla war, a background that creates the possibility of the remodeling of the hero from a damaged man to a missionary, thanks to the influence of the ideas of liberation.
Before the 90s, he also wrote the scripts for the films “Beyond the Stone Walls” (1979), “Time does not Waits” (1983).
After the 90s he collaborated with his son and wrote his screenplays with quality. He started with the film “Last Love” (1995), an interesting subject, taken from the roughness of the transition years, the loss of the moral reference points of society, the trafficking of women, crime, violence, prostitution, etc.
“Funeral Business” (1999) brought the idea of survival in a situation of total anarchy of competition and absurdity, appealing under the veil of the dramatic, but also of the grotesque, for attention and social normality.
In 2005, he wrote the screenplay “Dear Enemy”, an approach of a universal nature to war and man, articulating the human idea of the common misfortune that wars bring, irrational hatreds, victimization, the need to build communication and friendships across the lines that come from misuse of war policies.
Xhuvani passed away on September 19, 2009.
