Claudia Cardinale Italian actress, one of the stars of world cinema. She was born on April 15, 1938, in Tunis (Tunisia) to Sicilian parents, but she is an Italian actress. Her planned career as a teacher came to an end when, in 1957, she won the first prize in the competition for "The Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia". The prize consisted of a trip to Venice, where she immediately caught the eye of the Italian film industry. After attending the Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome for two months, she was awarded a seven-year contract with Vides Films, which led to her screen debut in Goha (1958), soon followed by a role in the international hit Big Deal on Madonna Street. One of the first films that made Claudina known as a talented dramatic actress was Valerio Zurlin's Girl with a Suitcase (1960). In Mauro Bolognini's Il' Bell Antonio, also released in 1960, she had another important role playing alongside Marcello Mastroianni, an actor with whom she worked in many films. 1960 saw her work for the first time with acclaimed director Luchino Visconti in his neo-realist film Rocco and His Brothers. Although Cardinale had a minor role in this film, her talent did not go unnoticed by the director, who then cast her in a leading role in The Leopard (1963) where she starred alongside cinema giant Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon. In fact, 1963 was an important year for the Cardinal. In addition to Maria's role in La Ragazza di Bube (Bebo's Girl), a role for which she won the Silver Award for Best Actress, this year also saw her work with another master of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini, in what many consider to be one of cinema's masterpieces, 8-1/2. Fellini was enamored with that 'strange' accent, which added mystery to the actress who once symbolized feminine beauty – the epitome of the ideal woman. The moment had come for Claudia Cardinale to act in Hollywood productions, although her role there as Princess Dala in Blake Edwards' The Pink Panther (1964) was filmed in Italy. Cardinale's voice was dubbed for the film The Pink Panther, and then the same was done the same year for the Samuel Bronston production of Circus World in which her voice was heard speaking English for the first time on celluloid. Other films in which she starred outside of Europe include the comedy thriller Blindfold (1965) with Rock Hudson, Lost Command (1966), another comedy Don't Make Waves (1967) with Tony Curtis, and The Hell with Heroes (1968). However, it is The Professionals (1966) that she considers the best of Hollywood films. Perhaps it was Cardinale's reluctance to leave her roots behind that led her to only have a short career in Hollywood, as she simultaneously continued to work on many European productions, including her third project with Viscount as Sandra in Thousand Delights (1965). So it's no surprise that it was a European production and her second venture into the western genre that brought her international fame. This was Sergio Leone's epic homage to the Western Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) – an Italian production that transcends the usual boundaries of the All'Italiana Western and a masterpiece which over the years has come to was appreciated as it deserves. Cardinale plays Jill McBain and is the central character in the film around which the other protagonists (Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson and Jason Robards) revolve.
