Aleksander Moisiu (1879-1935) Ambassador of the Albanian stage in the world! Prominent Albanian actor with world fame. He was born in Trieste on April 2, 1879. His emigrating father returned with little Alexander to Albania, precisely to Durres, where our great actor will grow up. At the age of 19, he went to Vienna, where with the help of Jozef Kainc, he devoted himself to acting. In 1898, he started his career as a comparist (actors, who play a small role) in the Burgtheater. Then followed engagements in the theater in Prague and Berlin. In Berlin Alexander Moisiu was admitted to Max Reinhardt's seminary with whom he went on tour to Petersburg (1911). Moses was celebrated there for the role of Oedipus. After this success he was engaged in many countries of Europe and North America. Moses' field of action encompassed the entire spectrum of European theater literature, from ancient Greek tragedy to modern times. His interpretations of Hamlet, Oedipus, Jedermann and Fedja in Leo Tolstoy's "The Living Corpse" became very popular. He also played the leading roles in the premieres of plays by Hauptmann ("Der weiße Heiland"), Wedekind ("Frühlings Erwachen") and Hofmannsthal ("Jedermann"). In 1920 he was the first to play the lead role in "Jedermann" at the Salzburg Festival Games (Salzburger Festspiele). Moses was highly regarded by his audience for his beautiful voice as well as his emotional engagement. He was considered especially in the years before the beginning of the First World War as one of the biggest actors in the German-speaking area. In the time between the two wars he spent a lot of time on tour. In Berlin he acted at this time only as a guest. His acting style was considered here as outdated and could no longer be compared to theatrical developments such as that of expressionism, or the political theater of Brecht or Piscator. From 1910 to 1935, he participated in 10 film productions, 8 of which were silent films. In 1935, shortly before his death, Moisiu requested the citizenship of Albania as well as that of Italy. Albania rejected this request, while Italy granted citizenship to Moses, when he was lying on his deathbed. He died on March 22, 1935 in Vienna. He is buried in the cemetery of the municipality of Morcote, near the city of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. Today Moses is worshiped and respected especially in Albania as one of the country's greatest actors, even though he never visited Albania since his youth. The acting school in Tirana as well as the Durrës theater bear his name. His wife Maria Moisiu was from Vienna. Aleksander Moisiu is the great-grandfather of the actor Gedeon Burkhard (known among other things for his main role in the series "Commissioner Rex").
