Tinka Kurti
Outstanding Cinematography and Theater Actress, People’s Artist / Grand Master / Honorary Citizen of Shkodër

She was born on December 17, 1932, in Sarajevo in an art-loving family. Her mother was one of the main actresses of the National Theater of Sarajevo. Her family moved, when she was five years old, to the city of Shkodra. Here she finished her seven-year education and in 1947 she left for Tirana to study at the Polytechnic of Tirana.

By chance – as she would say years later – she would go to the Drama Department at the Artistic Lyceum. But her studies would be brutally interrupted as she is expelled from school for “manifestation of liberal shows”.

The return to Shkodra in 1948 will find her as an employee in the Shkodra district museum. In this same year, she begins her activism as an amateur actress with the city’s House of Culture, where she will be chosen by the director Andrea Skanjeti for her first appearance on stage, when she was only 16 years old, in the melodrama “Shkodran Wedding” where she performs a “small” role, that of the Bride.

With the creation of the Professional Theater “Migjeni” in 1949, she will become active in this Theater as a semi-professional actress, being one of the ten founding actors of this Theater.

Her first “serious” part will be in Chekhov’s drama “The Engagement”. Her transition to a fully professional actress will coincide with the arrival at this Theater of the author Kol Jakova, who staged for the first time in Shkodër the drama “Our Land” where Tinka will play the role of File. With this role, she will be awarded the Festival Cup as the “Best Actress of the Republic” at the 1st Albanian Theater Festival.

Next, about 260 roles in the theater would continue, roles for which she would be awarded three Cups in Theater festivals. Here we can mention her masterful performance in the role of Old Woman Nicë in the drama “General of the dead army” by Piro Mani (Artist of the People), in the role of Grandmother in the drama “Gjaku i Arbërit” by Fadil Kraja, in the role of Loke in the drama “Our Land” by Kol Jakova, in the role of Vale in the drama “Histori Irkutase”, in the roles of Lady Macbeth or Desdemona in Shakespeare’s world masterpieces and many others.

Her most recent role will be that of Rozalia Solimenes in the play “Filumena Maturano” by Eduardo de Filipo staged by the troupe of the National Theater at the end of February 2009.

There will be many roles that Tinka Kurti has also performed in cinematography, a total of 95. Her first film will to coincide with the first all-Albanian film “Tana” in 1958 where she will play the role of the film’s protagonist, Tana.

A whole gallery of roles would continue, such as the role of Mother Pashako in the film “The Stars of the Long Nights”, the role of the mother of the boy in the film “The Happy Couple”, a role for which she will also receive the Medallion of the Festival as “Best Actress” at the 1st Albanian Film Festival held from April 5 to 11, 1976 in Tirana, the role of Miss Mançini in the film “Girls with Red Ribon”, the role of Dila in the film “Red Covenant”, the role of Mary’s Mother in the film “Death of a Horse”, the role of Mother in the film “Mother’s Heart”, a role for which she will receive the First Prize at the International Film Festival in Salerno (Italy). She skillfully performed in two Kosovar films: “When Remziu returns” – Remziu’s mother and “When the soul passes away”. Her most recent role will be in the movie “Bota” (2014).

In 1994 she rightfully entered the Encyclopedia of the American Biographical Institute as one of the 5,000 most outstanding women in the world. In 1996, this Institute announced the “Greatest Woman of the Year 1996”.

On December 17, 2007, she will be invited to Washington (USA) to place a marble plaque with her name in this Institute. In 2001, she will be declared “Honorary Citizen” of the city of Shkodra. Today, the General Gymnasium in Lekbibaj, an Albanian-Swedish Theater in Malmoe (Sweden) and a Cinema in Durrës bear her name.

In order to appreciate her role in Albanian cinematography at the 11th Festival held from April 23 to 27, 2000 in Tirana, she will be awarded the Grand Career Prize.

In 2003, director Esat Teliti made the documentary “Tinka” that will be shown in honor of this great artist at the “Millenium” cinema in Tirana on the occasion of her 71st birthday.

Married to Palok Kurti, leader of the first music band in Shkodër. In addition to the mentioned awards, she is also the youngest actress who, at the age of 28, was awarded the title “Honored Artist” in 1961. Later, for her great artistic merits, Tinka Kurti will be honored with the high title “People’s Artist”. Likewise, she will receive the “Grand Master” Order medal awarded by the President of the Republic of Albania.
