Ndrekë Luca
(September 3, 1927 – January 16, 1993)
Dramatic actor of the Albanian theater and cinematography. One of the Icons of Acting. Holds the title “People’s Artist”

Born in Dukagjin. For a while he worked as a soldier in aviation, but his real passion was theater and acting, so in 1949 he started his stage activity with the Army Theater and after a year, in 1950, he continued his career as an actor in the “Teatri Popullor”.

The role of Shpend Gjeto Plaku in the drama “Halili and Hajria” (1950) by K. Jakova will be the first. A role with which the later legend of our stage stood out with his talent, paving the way for other roles in the future, for 30 years on the stage within the time frame 1951-1987, the year he retired but continued to act. He has hundreds of roles in his career, standing out as one of the best actors on the stage alongside other theater masters.

After the first role of Iago in Shakespeare’s tragedy “Othello” (1953), and later successes one after the other, of Leka in the drama “Our Land” (1954) by K. Jakova.

In the play “Arturo Ui” by Brecht, Ndreke Luca played the role of Giri, combining satirical and dramatic plans with an expressive language, according to the Brechtian theater principles.

He created a prominent and realistic character with the role of Brung Troli (the drama “Great Flood” 1977 by K. Jakova). A year later, in 1978, he played the role of Avdullah Pashe Dreni in the drama “Besa e madhe” by Mirosh Markaj, while in the drama “Baca i Gjetajve” (1979) by F. Kraja, he played the role of Baca, with the troupe of the “Migheni” Theater ” in Shkodër, a brave, dignified, restrained mountaineer, where a strong dramatic direction is also present.

Luca was an actor, who operated with different interpretive plans, as comic as tragic, as heroic as ordinary, as in strong and sublime tones, as soft, “ordinary” and very human.

He had a characteristic voice, often killing and shrill, when he played especially negative roles, violent, wild people, criminal etc.

The legend Ndreke Luca went so far as to resize and “break” from time to time the preliminary model of the natural personal data, the self-conscious character of the characters he played.

He was one of the most vocal actors of the Albanian feature film, performing over 30 films, unique in their kind, such as Dom Marku (“Commissar of Light” 1966), Ndrio (“The Road of Letters”), Gjini (“The Old Wounds”), Pjetër Mustaqekuqi (“Operation Fire”), Ramiu (“Silent Duel” 1967.

Completely opposite characters in terms of temperament, behavior, energy, rhythm and speech. In 1969, he creates the character of Gjin in “Old Wounds”, an honest, big-hearted peasant, but who was burdened with old and inhibiting prejudices in favor of women’s abilities and merits in life.

Pjeter Mustakuqi in the film “Operation fire” is another of his acting forms in which Ndreke Luce’s acting is enhanced. With this skillfully interpreted role, he proved his ability especially in terms of facial expression wisdom figurative gesture, plastic and other means of visual identification of the character.

Countless roles if we count the theatrical ones as well. He remains one of the most successful in the application of grotesque forms in acting, both in Theater and Film.

In addition to being an actor, he has also written several dramas such as “Votra e huej”; “Bardha”; “Andrra ne diell”, but which achieved success with the drama “Shate shaljanet”, 1959, was staged by the troupe of the “Teatri Popullor”.

He has been honored with the high title “People’s Artist”!

On an ordinary day like any other day, he got up early, did his morning ritual, got his bicycle, a pre-World War II black women’s “Bianchi” that served him almost all his life to cut short roads and save time, tucked a bag under his arm and went out to do the shopping…

Ndreke Luca passed away on January 16, 1993
