Vangjel Grabocka (1913 – 2008)
Veteran actor of Korca theater and Albanian cinematography.
In the Korca Theater, but also in a good part of the Albanian cinematography, he is one of the “dinosaurs” of the scene, with a wide activity, especially in “A.Z Cajupi”, in his city where Grabocka contributed, being one of the founders of this theater.
Born on April 15, 1913, in Grabockë, Korçë, from a family of patriots, who moved to Korçë when he was a minor. At a young age, in order to make ends meet, he started working as an apprentice in a printing press, where later became its manager, staying there for about 25 years.
On July 22, 1950, he will be one of the founders of the professional theater “Andon Zako Çajupi” in the city of Korça, making a valuable contribution to the scene of this theater.
In this theater he has performed more than 200 roles, leaving deep traces with his outstanding performances, mainly in the first roles. Here we can mention the roles in parts written by Albanian and foreign authors, such as : “The Enemy of the People” by Ibsen, “The Flower of Memory” by Foqion Postoli, “Shadows of the Night” by Vedat Kokona, “Avarice” by Moliere, “Doktor pa dashka”, “Këneta” by Fatmir Djäta; “Permbysja”, “Stela Violanti” etc.
Unbeaten as an actor, Vangjel Grabocka has played about 25 roles in cinema, mostly secondary or episodic roles.
His career begins with an episodic role in the first, all-Albanian film, “Tana” in 1958. His successful performances in many roles would continue, such as : the role of Bamkë Qylollari in the movie
“I teti ne bronx” in 1970, the role of Dine Çobani in the movie “Perballimi” in 1976, the role of Rushani in the movie “Streha e re” in 1977, the role of Gon’s grandfather in the television film “Me hapin e shokëve” in 1979, the role of Idriz Cenko in the television series “Agimet e stînes se madhe” in 1981, the role of the Old Man in the film “Kush vdese ne kembe”, the role of uncle Gore in the film ” Nothing is forgotten” in 1985, etc.
At the age of 67 in 1980, he retired but did not stop acting both in the theater and cinematography, he never stopped loving the stage that raised him, so he did not stop his artistic activity, continuing to play many roles with royalties, although up to the advanced age of 85.
A rare case!!
He has played major roles in the Albanian scene, becoming a beloved character for the public, but without ever receiving any award for his valuable merits. Two were his biggest hostages, which he made public during the last moments of his life. Not being given a special pension and the title “People’s Artist”, which he fully deserved and without any merit of anyone else.
Married to Mrs. Eleni Grabocka, he is survived by four daughters.
Grabocka passed away from this life and his beloved family on September 11, 2008.
For his artistic merits, Vangjel Grabocka was awarded the title “Merited Artist”, while he deserved more than that.
